Hohensalzburg Fortress
Built in 1077 by the sovereign Gebhard I. von Helffenstein in the course of the investiture controversy between the German Kaiser Heinrich IV and Pope Gregor.
Archbishop Gebhard was forced into exile in 1085, resulting in his fortress building plans being completed by his successors. Today the fortress is considered the largest in Europe with an area of more than 14,000 m². The fortress belongs to the state, but has been under administration by the Province of Salzburg since 1953. The fortress' Romanesque walls surround the Great Hall, the living area, which still today comprise the main part of the castle keep. A fortress is not complete without numerous adjoining buildings and a castle kitchen.
