Filzmoos and its Bischofsmütze mountain

Once seen, never forgotten

The Bischofsmütze is the highest and probably the most beautiful mountain in the Gosaukamm range. Its imposing form is unmistakable. And that’s not all. The Bischofsmütze has a powerful yet calming prescence.

Its two peaks "Large Bishops's Mitre" (2,454 m), the "Small Mitre" (2,428 m)
are formed of reef limestone, the lower parts of primary rock.

The "Large Bishop's Mitre" is a popular mountain for climbing. It was conquered for the first time on 28.06.1879 by Auhäusler and Steiner, mountain guides from Ramsau.

On the 22nd of September 1993 at 3.45 p.m. there was a tremendous rumbling. A rock face of approx. 100 m wide broke off from the eastern flank of the Mitre and thundered down, coming to rest in the Eiskarl. On Sunday, the 10th of October 1993 the earth under the mountain shook again. More than 50,000 m³ of rock from the south and south-eastern flank plummeted down into the valley.
